Meet Nate Mellman
Nate is a River Forest father with two OPRF graduates and a current OPRF junior. He has seen how his kids have benefited from an excellent education, and he wants to ensure that OPRF continues to maintain the highest standards at the lowest possible cost and in the safest environment possible for current and future students.
Nate grew up as the son of two public school graduates who moved to a suburban school district so that their kids could benefit from an excellent public high school education.
For the last 20-plus years, Nate and his family have lived in Oak Park and River Forest, and their three kids all attended the local elementary and middle schools as well as OPRF High School, with two being recent graduates and one still attending.

With a combination of scholarships, loans, and part-time jobs, Nate graduated from New York University with a B.S. in Finance and International Business and, later, while serving on active duty, graduated from Seattle University School of Law.
Nate served his country for almost 30 years on active duty, the Air Force Reserves, and the National Guard, retiring as a colonel. He flew over 1,100 hours with NATO AWACS, working side by side with airmen from over a dozen different countries, as an airborne battle manager during the Bosnia-Herzegovina War, and later served as a military attorney. Nate knows how to work with others from diverse countries, backgrounds, and beliefs to achieve a common goal.
In his civilian and military career, Nate has served as a prosecutor and as a defense counsel. He has advised on employee and management disciplinary matters and managed a labor relations staff. He has handled union grievances, trained managers, and litigated employment claims. He has adjudicated disability claims as a federal administrative law judge. He has developed courses and taught as an employment law attorney, military attorney, and adjunct professor for two universities. Nate’s background has taught him to listen to all sides, consider the facts and the law, and make decisions.
Locally, Nate has served in leadership positions in his religious community, on the OPRF High School Community Council, and as a River Forest Fire and Police Commissioner.
As a father of three children who attended our local public schools, including OPRF High School, as a military officer, employment law attorney, and a judge, and as a committed local leader, Nate has the background and drive to make sure each child is academically challenged, to be an excellent steward of tax dollars, and to keep kids safe.
